How to Scrap a Car in the UK
If you are wondering how to scrap a car then here’s our step by step guide to scrapping a car in the UK…
Firstly, you must take your car to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). This is basically a scrap yard which is approved by the government for the safe disposal of cars which have been written off or are beyond economical repair. The ATF will accept cars, light vans and three-wheel motorcycles. ATFs are able to comply with the requirements of the End of Life Vehicle (ELV) and Environmental Permitting (EP) regulations.
The Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) will dismantle your car in an environmentally friendly way and issue a Certificate of Destruction (CoD). The ATF will notify the DVLA that your vehicle has been destroyed and that you are no longer responsible for it. You need to keep a copy of the CoD for your records.
If you are not issued with a CoD because the vehicle is not being destroyed by the ATF, then you need to inform the DVLA that you are no longer the keeper of the vehicle. You do this by completing a V5C/3 and sending it to the DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD.
If you dismantle the car yourself, then you need to tell the DVLA that it is no longer in use on a public road by completing a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notice) otherwise you will still be responsible for taxing the vehicle every year. You will need to take it to an ATF for the vehicle to be legally destroyed.
If your car has been written off in an insurance claim, then the insurance company may do this for you in return for a total loss payment in which case you’ll need to:
- complete and send the V5C/3 ‘Notification of sale or transfer’ section of your registration certificate to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD
- and give the remainder of the registration certificate to the insurance company
